Intersection Safety Reports:

This is to transmit a report titled Intersection Safety Needs Identification Report which summarizes the results of an assessment of the implementation status of the strategies in the 2002 National Agenda for Intersection Safety (available at http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/intersection/resources/intersafagenda/ ) and presents additional ideas and broad strategies to close the remaining gaps in addressing intersection safety in the US. Our initial thought was to develop and market a new or updated National Agenda but, after consultation with FHWA staff and our external partners, it was decided that another National Agenda was not needed or desired since the initial one had served to bring attention to the intersection safety problem in this country. A companion Report on the National Agenda for Intersection Safety was also prepared which summarizes the specific implementation status of each of the 2002 National Agenda strategies as determined through interviews, meetings, staff knowledge, feedback at conferences, and other sources. An electronic copy of each of these two reports is attached and is also available on the safety website at http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/intersection/resources/.

The reports can be used to help guide decision makers in any highway agency or organization in their investments in addressing crashes, injuries and fatalities at intersections. Although no hard copies of these reports will be prepared, feel free to make copies as you deem necessary. The Division Offices may distribute the report(s) to state and local agencies and organizations as they see fit. Our office will use the information in the documents as a guide when developing our annual intersection roadmap and project work plans.
